Image Description:
This engine is constructed so as to burn straw, cotton and maize stalks, reeds, &c., as well as coal or wood; it differs from the ordinary portable steam engine in having the lower part of the fire box prolonged to form an additional furnace, so that the portion which, in an ordinary engine, is the fire box, serves in this one as a combustion chamber, being separated by a fire-brick bridge from the furnace wherein the straw is burnt. The increased space and heating surface obtained by this arrangement are necessary for the complete development and absorption of the immense volume of flame and heat produced in burning straw. At a recent official trial it was found that the consumption of fuel did not exceed 14 lbs. of straw per indicated horse-power per hour. The stoking is easily performed by hand, the straw being forked into the furnace in large quantities at intervals, allowing the attendant time for oiling the engine, &c Any waste vegetable substance can be burnt when wood or coal is used. The foot lever, chain pulley, sliding door, and inclined plane, seen in the engraving, together with the fire bars, can be easily removed and the ordinary fire doors and grates substituted. In addition to the tools usually supplied with portable engines the following are added:—one pricker for fire, one scraper for tube plate, one hoe for emptying ash pan, one steel tube cleaner, one water-tight pan for hot ashes, and one spare fire-brick bridge, one pair doors, and two sets furnace bars.

Price.—8 horse-power £270, packing case for engine and apparatus £10 10s.; 10 horse-power £305, packing case for engine and apparatus £12 10s.; 12 horse-power £350, packing case for engine and apparatus £14 10s.
