In this engine the advantages of economy in space, saving in cost of erection, and portability belonging to the vertical arrangement are combined with the greater steadiness and solidity of the horizontal. The engine is complete in itself, and with its bed-plate is entirely independent of the boiler. The boiler is therefore not strained by the working of the engine, nor is the engine affected by the contraction and expansion that are commonly noticed in engines having their cylinders attached to the boiler. The bed plate, inner cover of the cylinder, guides, and plummer block for crank shaft bearing are all cast in one piece, considerably reducing the number of parts, and adding to the solidity and durability of the whole. The cylinder is covered to prevent condensation of steam. The flywheel is turned bright to receive a strap and the crank shaft is so arranged that additional driving pulleys may be fixed either inside or outside the ?y-wheel. A feed pump with gun-metal working parts is fixed to the bed plate of the engine. Gunmetal and steel are largely used throughout, and the engine is finished bright. The governor is one of Tangye’s patent, as applied to the “ Soho” engine by the same makers, and is extremely sensitive. The boiler is fitted with simple cross tubes, and supplied with all requisite fittings. Several sizes, from 2 to 14 horse-power, are made; particulars and prices of these are as follows:— |
