Mr. Charles Burrell, of Thetford, exhibits in Class 9, of the International Exhibition, a traction engine fitted with the well-known endless railway of the late Mr. Boydell. In many respects it an In improvement upon the earlier engines of this class. It is rated as of 10 nominal horse-power and weights 7 tons, whereas those originally made of the same power weighed from 9 to 10 tons. There are two cylinders, each 6½ in. in diameter and for 12 in. stroke, the gearing being in the proportion of 10 to 79, or 1 to 8 nearly. The gearing is of wrought iron, case hardened. At the ordinary spend of four miles an hour, the engine will take 20 tons on a level or 10 tons on an incline of 1 in 20. The workmanship is apparently of a very superior quality.
