A distinctly original and beautifully designed lathe by the Potter & Johnston Co., Pawtucket, R.I., is seen in Fig. 283. It is exactly like no other lathe of the class. It is intended to utilize common forged tools in a turret, as well as drills and reamers. The tools are held in recesses in the sides of the turret, adjustment for height being by means of reverse wedges fitted with tongue and groove. There are three recesses for lathe tools, and three holes for drills, etc. A tool in a post at the rear serves for cutting off, or for turning. Both tool slides have longitudinal traverse operated by hand levers, and stops are fitted to all movements. The gripping chuck is operated by the lever seen coming from the rear. There is no back-gear to the machine, but the steps are broad enough to take a 4½-in. belt. |
