A favorite form in America is that of a common engine-lathe, Fig. 219, with the usual tool-carriage, with change-wheels and lead-screw, but with friction-geared head, and with turret on its carriage. Screws of any pitch can be cut by the lead-screw and wheels, while the turret affords the means of turning, etc., and of cutting screws by dies. Fig. 219 is one of the Pratt & Whitney lathes, made in centres ranging from 5 in. to 13½ in. |
