The Bullard Machine Co., of Bridgeport, Conn., make vertical lathes in capacities between 3 ft. 1 in. diameter, by 2 ft. 6 in. high, and 5 ft. 2 in. diameter, by 3 ft. 6 in. in height. Some of these machines are fitted with a turret-head with four holes.
Some of the tables in the larger sizes are tee-grooved, others have universal chuck-jaws, for which independent jaws can be substituted. The 3 ft. 6 in. has a screw-cutting attachment, by which all standard threads, from four to twelve per inch, can be cut. One of the 5 ft. 2 in. machines has a special head fitted for boring by means of a revolving spindle for operating on crank-pin and shaft holes without removing the work.
Fig. 217 shows a 30 in. vertical lathe by this firm which affords an illustration of the application of a turret, saving the changing of drills, and reamers, and turning tools. The turret is 10 in. diameter, with four 2¼ in. holes, and has a vertical movement of 16 in. The machine will take 14 in. under the rail, 21 in. under the turret. There are twenty-four changes of feed, ranging from 1/40 in. to 1/4 in. in the horizontal direction, and from 1/80 in. to 1/10 in. in the vertical. |
