Image Description:
An American lathe of 30-in. centres, by the American Tool Works Co. (formerly the Davis & Egan Machine Tool Co.), is shown in Fig. 214. Lathes of this general type are made by the firm in from 12-in. to 30-in. centres. Those above 18-in. centres are triple-geared. The general construction is clearly apparent from the illustration: the broad steps of the cone pulleys, the deep internally-geared face-plate, the compound rest, the set-over poppet, with geared racking motion, and geared motion for the spindle. Points which are not so apparent are :—

The double aprons, so that gears and pinion shafts run between bearings instead of overhanging; the feeds reversible from the saddle, and the dropped central vees by which the normal swing is increased. There is a supplementary compound rest-attached to the left wing of the saddle, when required for turning large diameters. Feed screws and their handles are graduated. Belt-feeds with stepped cones are provided—though not seen in the Fig.—as alternative to the gear-feeds shown; the lead-screw being splined.
