Image Description:
Fig. 36 illustrates another of the Davis & Egan lathes, which combines several valuable features. These are made in 7-in., 8-in., and 9-in. centres. The guide-screw runs down the centre of the bed, instead of outside. It is directly under the front vee, taking hold of the carriage about the centre. A metric lead-screw is furnished when desired. The cutting of screws from 1½ to 80 threads per inch is done without changing gears, through a nest of gears within the bed, the change being effected by the lever seen below the headstock. A handle beside the apron of the carriage effects reversal in screw-cutting, doing away with the necessity of going to the headstock to reverse, or of reversing from the countershaft. There is an automatic arrangement in the apron for disengaging the clasp nuts, when the carriage can be returned by hand, and the nuts engaged automatically. The screw-cutting and the feed-gears cannot be engaged at the same time. Feeds can be thrown in or out, or reversed from the apron. The cross-feed has micrometer adjustments, and automatic stop. The loose poppet is cut away at the front to clear the cross-slide handle when working parallel with the bed. It is of the set-over type, and has graduations for setting it by. The inner vees of the bed are dropped 1 inch lower than the outer ones, so increasing the swing of the lathe by 2 inches and permitting of increase of metal in the carriage.
