Image Description:
Fig. 31 illustrates a modern type of English lathe by J. Archdale & Co., of Birmingham. Though a small lathe of 6-in. centre, it is a fully equipped, self-acting, sliding, surfacing and screw-cutting tool, having lead-screw, and back-shaft. The latter is driven not by belt but by gear, so that there can be no slip, and the rate of feed, which in belt-fed lathes is changed by shifting the belt on the steps, is altered by the lever in front of the headstock. The wheels for reversing either screw or back-shaft are within the headstock, so that overhang of the spindle is avoided. There is a quick withdrawal motion for use when screw-cutting. The headstock spindle is case hardened and ground, and runs in conical bearings of hard gun-metal. The guide-screw is protected at the cutting side of the carriage by a long cover-guard. The lathe is made as shown, or with a gap.
