Image Description:
Fig. 9 illustrates a 13-in., i.e. 6½-in. centre American lathe, manufactured by the Pratt & Whitney Co., of Hartford, Conn., U.S.A. It is in all essentials a typical lathe, with vee'd bed, weighted carriage, and set-over poppet. It is made without a gap, and has an elevating tool-post; and the illustration will be further referred to in this and later articles.

Since the presence of cross-ribs would be in the way of the traverse of the weight, these are omitted, and there is consequently nothing to reinforce the two cheeks excepting the end connections. The inherent weakness of this design has caused its nearly general abandonment in American practice, and many lathes are made with cross-bars or "girts," the weight being done away with, and the rest gibbed on one edge or on both
