The Waste Wool Around the Mill — Just how to profitably dispose of the waste wood which is inevitable as the result of the manufacture of Cooperage stock is a problem that if solved ought to mean much to the manufacturers of both tight and slack cooperage stock. In trying to enlist the Defiance Machine works of Defiance, Ohio, in this subject we elicited considerable information that may prove useful to those who may wish to dispose of the short ends accumulating around the factory. Regarding the waste around slack cooperage stock plants the Defiance people have this to say: "About the only thing we know of that is now being successfully made from waste elm material are head liners and crates. The head-liners are made on one of our Head liner Planing Machines of which you are familiar and they can be made from cull hoops or staves and the crates are usually made from cull hoops or from staves and the only machinery necessary for handling them is the Wiring Machine for wiring them together and these machines we do not manufacture. We know of one or two companies that are making chicken crates from cull hoops and it seems to be a very profitable business for them in connection with their hoop trade. We make a great many machines that can be successfully used for working up hardwoods of different kinds such as hickory, oak, ash, and maple, but for the elm, as we have above stated there are no small articles made from these woods. We are of the opinion that the stave, heading and hoop manufacturers are no doubt familiar with the crate business. For mills that are using hard wood such as oak, hickory and locust we would recommend the manufacture of insulator pins and brackets from their waste materials as we find that this article can be successfully made from short pieces or of-falls. Mills that use maple or birch we would recommend the use of our automatic machinery for producing broom handles and bobbins as the handles can be made from the long pieces of waste and the bobbins from the short stock. All of the articles above mentioned are constantly in demand and bring good prices and we find that they are about the only wooden articles that can be made from waste material at profit. We have found from several attempts of concerns making handles of short stock that the expense in preparing the stock was too great and here was no profit in the finished article, but the goods we recommend to be made we know that it can be accomplished with perfect success as we have a number of friends who are engaged in making these articles. The Defiance Machine Works will gladly add to this information when requested or will send information regarding their famous sawed or cut hoop machinery outfits which are in use in most of the leading hoop plants in the country. See their advertisement in another place or write to them if interested in hoop machinery or any of the above machines. |
