we are enabled to give some details of the later steam wagon, as per the illustration, Fig. 20. Mr. Buck sends the following account. This steam carriage No. 2 was built in 1866. It was steered and driven from the rear. The seats were placed above the locomotive type of boiler. The cylinders were 4 in. diameter and 14 in. stroke, one placed on each side and coupled direct to the cranked axle. The cylinders were bolted to the boiler barrel, as were also the main axle carriages, the front axle, and the seat brackets. We stated that the boiler was of the locomotive type, 21 in. diameter, with a firebox 44½- in. long. The boiler was fed by means of a pump and an injector. Before the steam was conducted to the engine it was superheated. The driving-wheels were 38½ in. diameter, the leading-wheels were 37 in. diameter, the wheel-base was about 7 ft. Plate springs were employed on the carriage. The wheels were made of cedar-wood, built up in sections as shown in the illustration, and hooped with steel tires. In working trim the steam carriage weighed two tons. |
