Image Description:
The engraving on the opposite page is a good illustration of the Payne High-Speed Corliss Engine. This engine has practically met the requirements of the trade in the direction of close regulation and economy in fuel; and the engine, it is claimed, is as economic in its running expenses as the Corliss, while at the same time it is as close in its regulation as the single-valve automatic.
In this engine the steam and exhaust ports are very large, when compared with the cross-sectional area of the cylinder; the area of the steam-ports being equal to one-tenth of the area of the cylinder, and the area of the exhaust-port equal to one-ninth of the area of the cylinder. By the use of the Corliss wrist-plate, which, as will be seen, has been retained in this engine, the steam-ports are opened very quickly, and nearly the full boiler-pressure is maintained up to the point of cut-off. The principal new feature in the construction of this engine will be found in the manner of controlling the speed of the engine, which is accomplished by a shaft-governor connected to the cut-off valves without the use of dash-pots and releasing gear, thus enabling the engine to run at high relative speeds; and we understand this engine to be the first of the kind in which a shaft-governor is used in connection with the Corliss type of valve motion. This governor is quick and positive in its action, and the variation in speed under extreme changes of load will not exceed one per cent.
