Image Description:
During the past few years there has sprung up au immense demand for high-speed automatic cut-off engines, of which there are numerous illustrations in this book. The Bass Foundry and Machine Company, in addition to the manufacture of their Corliss engines, have produced a high-speed engine, which, while very similar to the best engines of this class, has several features that are original with this engine.
The illustration on the page opposite is that of a Bass high-speed engine. The bed is of the form usually adopted for engines with overhanging cylinders.
It is very substantial and solid, fully capable of resisting the strains put upon it by the high speed which this engine is designed to run, and so designed that it can be solidly attached to the foundation.
The valve is of the piston type. The exhaust steam, when it leaves the cylinder, is not kept in contact with the outside, but passes directly away. It is absolutely balanced, and for that reason, as there is no wear, packing-rings are not necessary.
Two sprung rings are used as packing on the main piston, and as they are very wide and tongued together at the joint they cannot catch in the parts.
The slide bars are accurately scraped and unusually large. The connecting-rod is of the most approved form, and is arranged so as to take up any wear of the boxes. The crank-pin is of ample size, of steel, and the shaft is sufficiently heavy to prevent springing. It is perfectly fitted at the bearings.
The regulation is very close—within one or two per cent., it is claimed. This is accomplished by the use of a shaft governor of novel design, which is placed on a separate disc fly-wheel. The weights of the governor are very light, and the centrifugal force which they exert is resisted by springs under compression instead of extension. The governor is quick-acting, very sensitive, and is as close in its regulation as any other form of regulator. The governor is constructed complete in itself, independent of the fly-wheel, and in case of any breakage it could be replaced by a new governor in a few minutes. One size governor, by a simple adjustment of its parts, will fit an engine of 25 horsepower or one ten times that size.
