The frame is of the girder type, cast in one piece, reaching from cylinder to pillow-block, with a wide rib running along the top of frame, making it perfectly rigid. The front cylinder head is bolted to frame, thus making the strongest possible line of metal. The main pillow-block is fitted with quarter-boxes, which may be readily adjusted or rebabbitted without taking the shaft out. The guides are cast on main girder or bed, and project outwardly from the face of the girder and are brought directly above and below the cross-head pin, so that the running strains are met in the most perfect manner. The guiding surfaces being very flat bevels, the bed is strongly supported under these guides, so that the vibration and springing are reduced to a minimum. The cross-head is well proportioned with adjustable shoes, the piston-rod is fitted to cross-head on the taper and secured by a key. The piston-rod, cross-head pin, and crank-pin are all of the best steel. The cylinder is of best iron and provided with broad, heavy feet to rest on the foundation, and is jacketed with black walnut which is filled with non-conducting material. The valves are portions of solid cylinder oscillating within the valve-seats. The valves are not directly attached to the stem, but are at liberty to adjust themselves to them, so as to always fit in the seats; the wrist-plate rocks upon a projecting stud from the back-side of cylinder, and is operated by an ordinary eccentric-rod provided with a grab-hook; the wrist-plate is provided with four wrists, each having a connecting-rod reaching through the wrists in the arms of the valve stems. As the wrist-plate rocks, all the valves rock; the connecting-rods are adjustable in length so that any of the four valves may be adjusted independent with the others. The entire valve gear is very simple, and with reasonable care they last a great many years. The steam piston, which is of the best construction known to engine builders, is fitted with self-adjusting packing. Every point on these engines is provided with the most efficient means for oiling. The cylinders are provided with the best sight-feed lubricators; a crank-pin is lubricated through a tube, whose one end has a ball with a hole in it, located in line with the centre of the shaft, so that it may be oiled while running. The governor is of the most approved pattern, thus ensuring the most perfect regulation under any and all conditions. The material throughout the whole engine is the best that can be employed, and the finish is as fine as on any engine of its type in the market.
