The Reynolds Vertical Blowing Engine which is illustrated on the page following is of an approved pattern, and is in use in many large furnaces. The inlet valves on the air cylinders are made of bronze, the discharge valves, and valve seats are made of steel; the discharge valves are faced with a semi-elastic material, which forms a perfectly air-tight joint when they are seated. These elastic rings are movable, so they can be replaced when one becomes worn or broken. Any of the valves are easily accessible for removal and repairs, each independent of the other.
The steam cylinder is placed between the housings directly over the main crank-shaft; the piston-rod couples direct to the piston of the air cylinder. The Reynolds valve-gear is employed on the steam cylinder, and is controlled by an adjustable speed regulator, which can be adjusted by the engineer to suit any pressure or capacity required. |
