Image Description:
In the type of machine illustrated in fig. 247, which is an example designed and built by Kendall & Gent, Limited, Manchester, the arm is mounted upon a column of box section, and the arrangement is such that the arm can only be swung to a limited extent, and not all round as in the central column types. It will be seen from the illustration that the spindle is driven by a continuous belt, the tightness of which is not affected when the spindle saddle is moved along the arm. This latter adjustment is effected by means of the small star hand wheel at the front right-hand side of the saddle, the pinion of which engages with a rack on the arm. The spindle is fed by means of the large star wheel, or, when engaged, through a worm operated by the handwheel at the lower end of the saddle. Work of moderate size can be mounted upon the removable tables, which are provided with a trough to collect oil and cuttings; but when necessary the tables can be removed and the work be mounted directly upon the base plate. The machine is belt-driven from a three-step cone pulley, and in a convenient position at the front of column there is provided a starting and stopping hand lever.
