Fig. 243 represents a large adjustable multiple-spindle drill, constructed by the Pratt & Whitney Company, for drilling at one operation such pieces as valve and cylinder flanges of a maximum diameter of 36 in. In this case the work is set up on the base plate, and the counterbalanced head is fed by hand or by power by means of a screw, provided with ball-bearing thrust collars. An automatic knock-off gear is provided to disengage the power feed when the required depth of hole is drilled. Sixteen spindles are generally provided, the minimum distance between the spindle centres being 3½ in. and the greatest separation 24 in. or 36 in. The greatest distance from the column face to the centre of the drill head is about 18 in., and the vertical travel of the head is 24 in. |
