Multiple drilling machines of the type illustrated in fig. 237 have the advantage that the separation of the spindles can be varied to suit the spacing of the holes required, and that, when the spacing has been set, the holes can be bored or operated upon simultaneously. In the machine illustrated, which is manufactured by Kendall & Gent, Ltd., there are three spindle heads, separately adjustable along a fixed cross rail by a steel rack-and-pinion gear. It will be seen that the frame is of a strong and rigid construction, and that the table is fixed rigidly upon the main frame. There is one main cone-pulley drive for the three spindles, shown at the left end of the cross rail; but each spindle can be started and stopped independently of the others, and can be adjusted to suit drills of different lengths. Balanced hand levers, attached at the top of the spindles, serve to raise or lower them independently by hand; but they may also be racked up and down simultaneously by means of a handwheel placed at the extreme end of the cross rail. A self-acting positive feed motion is provided, and arrangements are made for feeding the spindles either together or separately |
