Image Description:
This machine, which we illustrate in the annexed engraving, is now being made by the Medart Patent Pulley Company, St. Louis, U.S.A. It is adapted for straightening bar iron and steel at the rate of 24ft. of 3in. bar in 3min. 20sec. and thus preparing it for the lathe. It also removes the scale and is used subsequently for removing the turning tool marks, and for polishing the bar. One unskilled workman is sufficient for attending to its operations. The press is placed at a distance from the chuck corresponding to the length of the piece to be acted upon, and the piece is placed in position, one end on the rolls, and the other held in the chuck. The chuck is then set in motion, and the top rolls are screwed down; the press is thus caused to travel automatically towards the chuck and back again. One man can in this manner straighten 1,500ft. of iron from 1¾ in. to 4 in, in diameter in 10 hours. We understand that many of the leading firms in America have testified to the usefulness of this machine.
