THE NEW HAVEN PLANER
The illustration, Fig. 39, shows the New Haven improved pattern planer, which planes 8 and 10 feet or longer, inside the pockets, 34 inches wide and 34 inches high. This machine is designed for the heaviest class of work and is heavy and powerful; at the same time, it is easily and conveniently operated. The bed is deep and wide, strongly braced and mounted on cabinets; the able is wide and thick, with deep ribs; the three T slots are planed out and the holes drilled. The driving motion is by two belts, one on each side of the machine, while all the gearing is within the bed, mounted on short steel shafts of large diameter, running in cap boxes. The cross bar is deep and strongly braced, and can be quickly raised or lowered by power by means of a friction clutch from the main driving shaft. The cross-feed screw is cut with double threads, giving rapid adjustment, and the bronze cross feed nut can be taken out without removing the saddle from the cross bar. The head has automatic power feeds in all directions, vertical, cross and angular, and is under full control of the operator from either side of the machine. It can be adjusted in any direction without disturbing the feed pawl, and the planer can be started or stopped from either side. The table can be run back to examine work without changing the position of the dogs and the feed can be instantly changed from nothing to the coarsest while the planer is in motion. All gears and racks are cut from the solid stock, shafts and screws are of steel, with the nuts case-hardened. The Vs of the bed and table are lubricated by means of three sets of friction rolls running in oil pockets in the bed. Cross bars of suitable length for double heads can be furnished so that the extra head can be run aside and the remaining head plane the full width; also, heads with the automatic power feeds for one or both uprights may be had, if desired. All sliding surfaces are scraped.
Driving pulleys on the countershaft are 16 inches in diameter, 5-inch face and should run 10 revolutions to give a cut of 1 foot per minute. The countershaft belt should run open. Machines are set up and thoroughly tested before leaving the works and are guaranteed accurate. These machines are manufactured by the New Haven Mfg. Co., New Haven, Conn. |
