Fig. 11 is a combination of Haigh’s radial arm continuous feed saw bench and an electric motor. This bench has recently been much improved in important details. In the form shown on the engraving these benches are specially adapted for cutting deals and battens into boards at a rapid rate. A special and important feature of the bench is the design of the radial arm -feed motion. By the device adopted, the distance between the centre line of the feed rollers and the vertical feed shaft is practically constant. The chain, by this arrangement, never requires altering in length, though suitable arrangements are made for tightening it. As can be seen on the engraving, the position of the rollers can be altered for various sizes of saws by a movement of the radial arm pillar in the direction of the length of the bench. When not in use for feeding purposes, the radial arm will swing round to the delivery end of the bench, quite out of the way of the machinist. The feed motion is driven from the saw spindle, and is provided with an independent striking gear and fast and loose pulleys. The rates of feed are four in number, and vary from 15 to 60 feet per minute, or other rates, to suit the convenience of customers. The adjustable fence is fitted with friction rollers, closely spaced at the saw end to facilitate the cutting of thin boards. Rollers are fitted to the front of the bench for the convenience and ease of returning the deal to the feed end of the machine when successive cuts have to be taken. This machine is also made with a rope feed. |
