Image Description:
Improved Dowel Machine.

The engraving herewith represents a new rod, pin or Dowel machine recently brought out by W. A. Heath, of Binghamton, N. Y. It is adapted for boring rolls from l 3/8 inches up to 2 1/2 inches. It is designed especially for use with chair stock, curtain poles and other similar work. The principle upon which the machine is constructed will be understood by the following description: There are four rolls, two on each side of the arbor, made adjustable up and down, in boxes held to the frame by cap screws, with a slot in the frame. In the top box there is held a rubber spring. The form of each side of the head is made so that, by putting a long bolt through the bottom of two ears or lugs on the bed of the plate, a hinge is constructed by which either one or both of the rolls can be let down for changing the head or taking out broken sticks. The arbor is made of steel with a screw cut into it to accommodate the heads which screw in place. The bearings are of brass. The machine has three changes of feed and also a stop and reverse motion. This can he made effective while the machine is running. The entering feed rolls have square grooves to fit the rough stock to be turned, and the discharge roils have round grooves to correspond with the turning head.
