Machine for smoothing planed wooden surfaces
|
Baxter D. Whitney |
Winchendon, MA |
This is a fixed-blade planer, which scrapes the surface of rough stock. "The object of my present invention is to obtain a machine that will be capable of smoothing the surfaces of boards and similar stuff, whether such stuff has been previously reduced to a uniform thickness and perfectly plane surface or not; and this I accomplish by allowing the block which carries the scraper or smoothing knife to have a small amount of vibration to accommodate to any inequalities in the surface to be smoothed, while the stuff rests on a rigid plane bed or carriage. "This machine will be found particularly well adapted to smooth the surfaces of thin stuff such as is used for the hoop or sides of light wooden boxes (cheese boxes &C.) and veneered stuff." The 1871-07-22 issue of Scientific American carried a list of patents for which extensions were requested, including this one. The extension was subsequently granted. |

Improvement in planing-machines
|
Baxter D. Whitney |
Winchendon, MA |
The innovation here is a means of preventing the buildup of pitch on the feed-rolls. "My invention consists in making the size of the back-pressure feed-roll or rolls, or the size of the gear-wheel which drives them, so as to give the surface of the roll or rolls a greater or less motion than the front feed-rolls and lumber to be planed, thus causing the back roll rolls to slip a trifle on the planed surface, and thereby preventing any accumulation on the rolls, to cause indentations in the planed wood." |

Spindle-lubricating means
|
Willard N. Sawyer |
Winchendon, MA |
This spindle-shaper lubrication system uses a wick to provide a steady bearing lubrication to a sump, where a slinger throws up a mist of lubrication onto the bearings. In addition to the lubrication system, a treadle moves a wrench that holds the spindle from rotating when needed. The lubrication system of this patent was used for decades on all Whitney shapers and was an important factor in their success. |
