USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

1,151,837 Aug. 31, 1915 Variable-speed belt-gearing Carl Edward Tannewitz Grand Rapids, MI This lathe belt system has been seen on a Tannewitz lathe—a quite uncommon machine. This variable-speed belt system uses a separate belt for each speed. Each belt is loose so that it normally hangs without contacting the drive pulley at the bottom. The idler pulley is moved in front of one of the belts and levered forward, which forces that belt into contact with the drive pulley.

This patent covers the tire; the rest of the wheel is covered by patent 1,645,552. The better-known, but similar, Carter bandsaw wheel and tire were developed a couple of years after Tannewitz's design; see patents 1,765,402, 1,765,403, and 1,811,916.
