Extended 7 years, and reissued shortly after the extension kicked in. Innovation is primarily the fact that the stock is hollow. The reissue clarified that the shape of the stock is designed to minimize air resistance. This patent cutter arm was seen in an 1869 catalog from R. Ball & Co., which makes it very likely that it was also manufactured by that company's predecessor, Ball & Williams (active 1858 to 1865). It seems as likely as not that R. Ball & Co.'s successor, Witherby, Rugg & Richardson, also manufactured this arm but we do not have confirmation. |

The inventor was a partner in woodworking machinery maker Ball & Ballard, a firm that succeeded Ball & Rice in 1854, and was in turn replaced by Ball & Williams in 1858. The latter company reportedly manufactured this invention. |

Extended 7 years. The reissue seems to be simply to improve the wording, and emphasize that the shape of the stock is designed to provide the necessary strength and stiffness while minimizing air resistance. |
