Miter-cutting machine
|
Willis J. Perkins |
Grand Rapids, MI |
(Information here—and for other universal trimmers—is courtesy of Jeffrey S. McVey.) This universal trimmer was purportedly designed by Joseph A. Oliver, who had briefly worked for Fox Machine Co. Perkins and Oliver formed Grand Rapids Machinery Co. to make this trimmer, but Fox filed suit and Perkins sold his share to Oliver (in 1890). In 1892 Oliver started American Machinery Co., but continued Grand Rapids Machinery Co. until 1903, when he combined the two companies and name the result Oliver Machinery Co. We have a report of a trimmer labeled "W.J.PERKINS PAT.APR.7.91.U.S.A.ENG&GER Manufactured by Perkins & Co Grand Rapids Michigan USA". |

Cutter-head for planing-machines
|
Ernst Carstens |
, Germany |
Circular cutter-head for jointers and planers. Appears to have been exclusively licensed to Oliver Machinery Co., who put it on their own machines, supplied it as an OEM part to other makers, and sold it as an after-market upgrade. This cutter-head was a big safety advance, but now considered dangerous because the head can fly apart if the bolts fail. |

Electric-motor unit
|
Howard B. Tuthill |
Grand Rapids, MI |
This patent number was seen on an Oliver model 51-B lathe that exactly matches the patent drawing. "This invention relates to a combined electric motor and controls therefor built as a unit so that all of the controls and safety devices used in connection with the motor are not only located in close proximity therewith, but are housed with the motor so that all together make a single unit which may be readily applied to various types of machinery which the motor is to drive and in which all of the wires connecting the different elements of the construction are housed and out of the way, there being no danger of injury to the insulation with a consequent short circuit or other undesirable happening. The only wires which are exposed are the feed and ground wires which supply current to the motor and carry the same away." |
