John Hetherington founded his firm in 1836 and started to manufacture a back-gear turning lathe ca 1847. In 1854, his son, John Muir Hetherington became a partner. The company grew from 200 employees in 1851 to 900 in 1871. In 1888 the Double Planer and Double Cold Saw were introduced and in 1890 the firm incorporated as John Hetherington & Sons, Ltd. With the addition of a texile machinery firm, the company had over 4,200 employees in 1914.
