Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
X9,430 Feb. 25, 1836 Firearm Samuel Colt Hartford, CT Most of the patents prior to 1836 were lost in the Dec. 1836 fire. Only about 2,000 of the almost 10,000 documents were recovered. This patent was one of the ones that were reconstructed after the fire.
104,913 Jun. 28, 1870 Pipe Wrench James A. Wilcox Rocky Hill, CT This wrench is an improvement on Wilcox's Sept. 3, 1861 patent (no. 33,223). The bottom adjusting screw is modified, and the spring rides on a fixed rod and bears on a bolster which pushes the adjustable jaw against the work piece.
A known example has the patent information hand stamped. It looks very similar to an example marked with Wilcox's Sept. 12, 1871 patent (no. 118,891).
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" attributes the wrench to J.A. Wilcox of Rocky Hill, CT based on the assignment. A known example is marked as "Colt."
118,891 Sep. 12, 1871 Improvement in Pipe Wrench Walter S. Wilcox Hartford, CT A compression spring keeps the hook jaw engaged with the work piece. The patent is an improvement to James Wilcox's Sept. 3, 1861 (no.33,223) and June 28, 1870 (no. 104,913) patents.
Known examples marked WILCOX'S PAT. Sept. 12, 1871 Mf'd by COLT'S Pt.F.A. Mfg. Co. HARTFORD, CT. actually have the secondary screw adjustment shown in patent no. 104,913.
