      Founded in 1876 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the German firm Gas-motoren-Fabrik Deutz. With the advent of Word War I, the U. S. government forced the divestiture of the firm and it became a subsidiary of Superior Gas Engine Co.
Nicolaus August Otto was the inventor of the 4 Cycle gas engine.
