Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

470,204 Mar. 08, 1892 Electric cut-out and safety device Alexander W. Meston St. Louis, MO Emerson was founded in 1890 by Charles and Alexander Meston. John Wesley Emerson was their principal investor. They claim that in 1892 they sold the first electric fans in America but we have seen an 1883 catalog from Bergman & Co. of New York that shows electric desk and pedestal fans (they are far from the only company to claim that "first"). From about 1948 Emerson began making tools and machinery for Sears, Roebuck & Co. In 1962 Emerson became the primary supplier of such products to Sears, and that relationship continued until 1998.

844,383 Feb. 19, 1907 Electric motor Charles R. Meston St. Louis, MO "This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in electric motors, particularly alternating-current motors, wherein there are employed starting-coils through which the current is directed when the motor is started, said coils when the motor attains speed being automatically cut out. When the armature attains speed, said armature automatically throws into operative position a clutch mechanism whereby the armature becomes coupled to the shaft."
