In 1870, when this patent was issued, the inventor was partner in steam engine manufacturer Wheeler & Whitlock, which became Wheelock Engine Co. in 1887.
Claim:
My invention consists in certain novel features in the construction and arrangement of mechanism, and my object has been to produce a boring apparatus possessing a greater degree of general utility, and capable of more perfect results in its operation. |

"New and improved construction of distributing valves and mechanisms." An 1889 catalog from Goldie & McCulloch features the "Wheelock Automatic Cut-Off Engine" and they claim to "have built more Wheelock Engines than the combined output of all Brown and Corliss Engine builders in the Dominion." The catalog also gives a long list of Canadian users of the Wheelock engine, and notes that they had sold more than 260 such engines. |
