Filing Machine
|
William Anderson |
Chicago, Cook County, IL |
Abstract:
Its primary object is the provision of a power-driven appliance by means of which the filing of metals and like hard substances may be accomplished mechanically as distinguished from the manual filing commonly done. A further object of the invention is the production of a machine of the character mentioned, the organization of which is such as to insure accuracy in the filing operation, so that the completed work shall present a nicety of finish comparable to the finish resulting when filing is done by hand. Furthermore, the invention also has in contemplation a filing machine which may operate on the work both externally and internially thereof. The machine, therefore, is capable of general application within the sphere for which it is designed, and is so constructed as to enable the user of the same quickly to adapt the machine for operation on either the exterior or the interior faces of the material presented to the machine.
Claim:
In a machine of the class described, the combination with a driving wheel and a driven wheel, of a flexible carrier supported by said wheels, a series of treating elements mounted 'on said carrier and each affixed thereto at a point midway its ends, whereby to permit flexing of the carrier in its travel about said wheels and to adapt said elements to break joint with each other as they pass over the wheels, aligning means at opposite sides of the point of attachment of each treating element with the carrier, said aligning means serving to connect each treating element with the carrier to hold the same marginally aligned with the marginal portions of the carrier, a work support adjacent to the path of movement of said carrier for sustaining the work in its presentation to the treating elements, and means for guiding the treating elements in their movement relatively to the work. |

Filing Machine
|
Benjamin Grob |
West Allis, Milwaukee County, WI |
Abstract:
his invention relates to improvements in filing machines of the type wherein the work is subjected to the abrasive action of a continuous series of files carried by an endless chain which coacts with spaced pulleys driven so as to constantly advance the successive files in the same direction past the work.
(4) This ,application is a continuation in part of the co-pending applications resulting in the Patents No. 1,949,742, issued March 6, 1934, and 1,958,477, issued May 15, 1934, and particularly with respect to certain claims divided out of the application resulting in the patent last mentioned. An object of the invention is to provide an improved machine of the type wherein the successive files are most effectively guided, and in which 'the files are so constructed and co-act with each other in a manner whereby a continuous and highly efficient abrasive surface is presented to the work.
Claim:
In a filing machine, a guide fixedly supported at both ends and having elongated plane bearing surfaces on opposite sides of a central groove, a series of files of greater width than said guide each having spaced central recesses and rear side portions co-operable with said guide surfaces on opposite sides of said recesses, the adjacent ends of the successive files being disposed diagonally in one direction across said guide while the file teeth extend diagonally in the opposite direction, a main U-shaped sheet-metal link attached directly to each file and having punched integral projections of less height than the link thickness and of less width than said groove snugly engaging said recesses between said guide surfaces, other U-shaped sheet-metal links disposed between said main links and co-acting with said diagonal file ends between said guide surfaces, and solid links pivotally connecting the adjacent ends of said main and other U-shaped links to provide a carrier chain movable within said groove. |

Endless Abrasive Device
|
Benjamin Grob |
Grafton, Ozaukee County, WI |
Abstract:
Endless abrasive devices for this purpose ordi- n' arily include a longitudinal succession of rigid file elements or the like, each attached usually intermediate their ends to a flexible endless carrier. The carrier is commonly in the form of a chain or band adapted to be trained about a pair p of spaced supporting and driving pulleys, and the attachment of the file elements is such as to render one or both ends of each element free of the carrier, so as to permit the latter to follow the pulley contours, and yet to effect substantial alignment or realignment of the elements in their straight course of travel between pulleys.
Claim:
A flexible abrasive device for abrading ma-chines, said device comprising a flexible carrier, a succession of rigid abrasive elements attached directly to said carrier, each element extending lengthwise of said carrier and having an end swingable clear of said carrier upon flexing the latter, and means on said carrier co-acting with said ends of said elements for accurately registering the adjacent ends of successive elements, said means and elements being relatively movable into and out of co-acting relation by flexing said carrier toward and from a straight condition. |

Filing Machine

Benjamin Grob |
Grafton, Ozaukee County, WI |
Abstract:
Machines of the type referred to are now extensively used throughout the metal working arts to give a desired contour and or finish to parts of various metal objects. Such machines ordinarily involve a longitudinal succession of rigid filing or abrasive elements attached to a continuously driven endless carrier by which they are advanced past or through a piece of work, the filing or abrading action being effected by pressing the piece of work against the rigid elements as they are thus mechanically advanced. There are kinds of work however for which such machines, as heretofore designed, are not adapted or capable of use. That is to say, in some instances, the size or shape of the work piece, or the peculiar location thereon of the part to be filed or abraded, renders the same inaccessible to the moving files or abrasive elements of such machine. An object of the present invention is to provide a filing or abrasive machine of the continuous motion type so constructed as to render the filing or abrasive elements more readily accessible to the work at hand. Another object is to provide an endless file carrier for filing and abrasive machines of the type mentioned capable of following paths of maximum deflection. Another object is to provide an endless file carrier for filing and abrasive machines of the type mentioned so constructed as to permit mounting the filing or abrasive elements on the back or inner side of the carrier. Other more specific objects and advantages will appear, expressed or implied, from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of the present invention. For purposes of illustration and explanation the invention is herein shown as embodied in a machine specially designed to file the rear marginal surfaces of turbine vanes, although the same may be advantageously utilized in filing and abrading machines for various other kinds of work.
Claim:
A machine of the character described having an endless succession of substantially fiat transversely extended filing elements or the tike, an_ endless carrier for advancing said succession of elements edgewise along a predetermined path, said elements having end portions with abrasive faces projecting laterally beyond an edge of said carrier and means for supporting a work piece within the range of operation of said projecting end portions to be acted on by said abrasive faces. |
