Edwin Nelson Boynton (1833-1886) was co-inventor and sole assignee on an 1878 patent for a drill press for metal. It appears that he manufactured a line of drills under his own name, but by 1881 his drills were made by the partnership of Boynton & Plummer.

- An article in the October 1881 issue of Manufacturer & Builder mentions that Boynton & Plummer was an exhibitor at that year's exhibit of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute. Their display, of metal-working tools and machines, included drilling machines, bolt cutters, and shaping machines.
- A posting to the oldwwmachines "The Shop" forum describes a post drill with the E. N. Boynton name on it.
