Planing machine
|
George W. Harris |
Lowell, MA |
"The nature of our invention consists in providing for planing-machines a bed-piece or table, formed in two parts, each of which is pivoted at the same distance from the centre of the cylinder, with cutters, they being so operated, by a screw, as to depress the front part and elevate the back part of the table simultaneously, thus keeping the top surface of the same parallel to and with each other." Photos of this jointer are available in the Photo Index at VintageMachinery.org/. |

Band sawing machine
|
Wilson W. Carey |
Lowell, MA |
The outermost part of the bandsaw table can be lowered to provide maximum cut height, or raised level with the rest of the table to provide maximum cut width. I love this idea. Where can I buy a saw like this? Not on the used market, apparently, for we have never seen an example. |

Self-lubricating bearing
|
Charles E. Gee |
Lowell, MA |
"This invention relates to improvement in self-lubricating bearings particularly designed for hubs for loose pulleys, although the invention is equally well adapted, with a slight modification, to stationary bearings." This patent is very interesting because it ties together two 19th century woodworking machinery makers: C. E. Gee and W. W. Carey, both of whom manufactured machinery under his own name. It appears that this patent is from Gee's early career, before he started out on his own. |
