Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

1,085,971 Feb. 03, 1914 Method of humidifying air and controlling the humidity and temperature thereof Willis H. Carrier Buffalo, NY This patent covers a method of simultaneously controlling the temperature and humidity, especially for (but not limited to) textile mills. The patent specification creates the impression that the inventor had performed many experiments to characterize the behavior of water vapor and air as temperatures are varied. He found that over the range of temperature and relative humidity normally desired in a textile mill, the difference between air temperature and dew point is practically constant. Thus, the relative humidity can be controlled by conditioning the intake air to be a specific number of degrees cooler than the inside air, while simultaneously using a water mist to bring the intake air to the dew point.
