14,221 Feb. 12, 1856 Wrench William Baxter Newark, NJ Diagonal screw adjusts the opening of two open end jaws.
Updated by Baxter's July 17, 1883 patent (no. 281,431). J. Ashton Greene's Feb. 19, 1884 patent (no. 14,756) is a design enhancement that coincides with the wrench being produced by Greene, Tweed & Co. of New York -- they had registered "labels" for both forms of Baxter wrenches at the U.S. Patent Office in March, 1883.
George C. Taft's Dec. 14, 1869 patent no. 97,988 presents an alternative screw arrangement for a diagonal adjusting "S" wrench.
84,605 Dec. 01, 1868 Improvement in Wrenches William Baxter Newark, NJ Adjustable S-Wrench consisting of two pieces mortised into each other, and connected with a left- and right-hand screw with a central knurl. Corresponding British patent 186803985 (i.e. 3,985 of 1868) was granted Dec. 31, 1868.
Improvements to the tenons were addressed in Baxter's July 17, 1883 patent (no. 281,432).
