William Lodge was a partner in Lodge & Davis Machine Tool Co. of Cincinnati, OH, which was a predecessor of the American Tool Works. He went on to found the Lodge & Shipley Machine Tool Co.
This invention relates to improvements in lathes such for instance, as shown and described in Patent No. 468,183, dated February 2, 1892, to which reference is made, and it has for its object to simplify and improve the mechanism of such lathes whereby they may be more easily and quickly adjusted and adapted for use in turning a greater variety of work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is;
1. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle and feed screw, and the counter shaft from which the feed screw is driven, of the segment pivoted on said counter shaft, the gear wheel on the counter shaft, the gear wheels on the spindle and the idler gears carried by the segment movable longitudinally on their centers and meshing with either of the gear wheels on the spindle and with the gear on the counter shaft; substantially as described.
2. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle and gear wheel thereon, of the adjustable segment having the smooth stud, the gear wheels movably mounted on said stud and having the flanges embracing the gear wheel on the spindle when the same are in mesh and the feed screw driven from the gears on the segment; substantially as described.
3. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle having the different sized gear wheels thereon, the countershaft from which, the feed screw is driven and the gear wheel on said counter shaft, of the adjustable segment pivoted on the counter shaft, the different sized gear wheels-journaled on said segment and bodily movable thereon to mesh with either of the gear wheels on the spindle and the idler gear completing the train of gears between the spindle and counter shaft; substantially as described.
4. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle and feed screw, of the different sized gear wheels rigidly mounted on the spindle and separated a distance equal to the thickness of one gear wheel and the movable gearwheels of different size rigidly connected together and adapted to mesh with one or the other of the gear wheels on the spindle, the one of said movable gear wheels not in mesh occupying the space between the gear wheels on the. spindle, the feed screw being driven from said movable gear wheels; substantially as described.
5. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle, the feed screw, and a cone of gear 95 wheels from which said feed screw is driven, a bell-crank tumbler movable longitudinally of the cone, a gear wheel and idler gear wheel carried by the tumbler and means for varying the speed transmitted to the gearing on too the tumbler, of an extension of said tumbler protruding from the head stock and provided with means for retaining it in the desired position relative to a gage plate.
6. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle; the feed screw and a cone of gear wheels from which said screw is driven, a bell-crank tumbler movable longitudinally of the cone, gear wheel and idler gear wheel carried by the tumbler, included within the head-stock; and means for varying the speed transmitted to the gearing on the tumbler, of an extension of said tumbler protruding from the head stock and provided with a pin for retaining it in the desired position relative to a gage plate.
7. In an engine lathe, the combination with the spindle, feed screw driven therefrom and reversing mechanism interposed between said feed screw and spindle, the clutch controlling said reversing mechanism, the clutch operating shaft, the carriage and upper slide thereon, the clutch slide carried by said upper slide and connections between said clutch slide and clutch operating shaft whereby by the transverse movement of the upper slide said clutch is operated as set forth.
8. In an engine lathe, the combination with the feed screw, reversing mechanism therefor, carriage and upper slide thereon having a groove or way therein, of the clutch operating shaft controlling the reversing mechanism, the block mounted on said, shaft, the clutch slide mounted in the way or groove in the upper slide, the bolt for clamping said clutch slide in position and connections between said clutch slide and block; substantially as described.
9. In an engine lathe, the combination with the feed screw, reversing mechanism therefor, carriage, upper slide and clutch operating shaft controlling the reversing mechanism, of the block on said clutch operating shaft, the clutch slide carried by the upper slide, the link connected to said clutch slide and the adjustable clip connecting said link and block whereby the direction of movement of the clutch operating shaft with relation to the movement of the upper slide may be changed; substantially as described.
10. In an engine lathe, the combination with the feed screw, carriage, upper slide thereon and clutch operating shaft controlling the reversing mechanism, of the block mounted on said clutch operating shaft and having the portions projecting on each side of said shaft; the clutch slide carried by the upper slide and the link and adjustable clip connecting said slide and block; substantially as described.
11. In an engine lathe, the combination with the feed screw, carriage, reversing mechanism for the feed screw and clutch operating shaft controlling the reversing mechanism, of the block mounted on said shaft the clutch slide connected to said block and moving longitudinally with the carriage, the operating handle for said clutch slide and the link connecting the slide and handle; substantially as described.
12. In an engine lathe, the combination with the bed, carriage, apron gearing thereon having a cone of gear wheels and apron feed shaft, of the gear wheel rotating with said shaft, the carrier and an idler wheel journaled thereon, meshing with the gear wheel on the shaft and adapted to mesh with any one of the gears in the cone; substantially as described.
13. In an engine lathe, the combination with the bed, carriage, apron gearing thereon having a cone of gear wheels and the apron feed shaft, of the gear wheel on said shaft, the carrier moving with the carriage and pivoted on the shaft and the idler wheel on said carrier meshing with the gear wheel on the shaft and adapted to mesh with any one of the gear wheels in the cone; substantially as described.
14. In an engine lathe, the combination with the bed, carriage, apron gearing thereon having a cone of gear wheels and the apron feed shaft, of the gear wheel on said shaft, the carrier pivoted on the shaft and embracing the gear wheel, the idler wheel on the carrier meshing with said last mentioned gear wheel and adapted to mesh with any one of the gear wheels forming the cone and the arm on the carrier cooperating with a gage plate on the apron to indicate the position of the gears; substantially as described.
15. In an engine lathe, the combination with the bed, carriage, apron gearing carried thereby and embodying a cone of gear wheels and the apron feed shaft, of the gear wheel on the apron feed shaft, the carrier pivoted on said shaft and having the idler wheel meshing with said gear wheel and adapted to mesh with any one of the gears in the cone, the handle on the carrier, a locking catch on the handle and a gage plate on the carriage with which said catch cooperates; substantially as described.
16. In an engine lathe, the combination with the bed, longitudinally movable carriage and transversely movable slide mounted on said carriage and having the rearward projection, and the screw for moving said slide detachably engaged therewith, of the supplemental carriage, a clamp for holding it in adjusted position, the adjustable guide on said supplemental carriage and the slide block detachably connected with the transversely movable slide and working in the adjustable guide; substantially as described.
17. In an engine lathe, the combination with the bed, longitudinally movable carriage and transversely movable slide mounted on said carriage and having the slotted rearward projection, the screw for moving the slide and the nut connecting the slide and screw secured in the slot of the rearward extension, of the supplemental carriage, a clamp for holding it in adjusted position, the adjustable guide on said supplemental carriage and the slide block adjustably connected with the rearward extension of the slide and working in the adjustable guide; substantially as described.

My invention relates to feeding mechanism for metal working machinery, and is exemplified as applied for feeding the saddle of a so-called metal shaper, for presenting the work in successive or intermittent steps to the action of the tool, which is instanced as mounted on a reciprocating ram. In machinery of this character, it is usual to mount the work upon a saddle which is feedable crosswise of the vertical plane in which the tool reciprocates, the saddle being slidable upon a rail, which is adjustable up and down with relation to the path of the tool. It is usual also to initiate the feeding movements from a fixed point of the machine, for instance, from the axis of rotation of the bull-wheel. The point for application of the feeding movements is therefore stationarily positioned, and the point for reception of the feeding movements at the feeding device is adjustable vertically in a right line, resulting in different distances between said points at different elevations of the rail. It is one of the objects of the invention to compensate for the variant distances between these two points. It is the object of the. present invention, further, to provide novel means whereby to automatically maintain the means for applying the feeding movements, the means for receiving the feeding movements, and,, the connecting means there between, at substantial distance and angular relations to each other. A further object is to provide novel means in the train of mechanism for accomplishing the feeding movements, whereby, to permit yield due to the variant distances between points in the power applying mechanism and the power receiving mechanism during adjustments to elevation of the power receiving mechanism; and,, further, to provide novel means, whereby to automatically return the yielding member of said mechanism to normal relation. A further object of the invention is to provide novel safety means whereby yield is permitted in the feeding train to compensate for obstruction to feeding movement of the element being fed, for instance, when the saddle reaches the end of its feeding path; and, further, to provide novel gauging means for the adjustments of lengths of feeding movements

The present invention relates to clutch actuating means for machine tools, and is shown employed for actuating clutches in a lathe apron concerned in the feeding movements of the tool-holder. In machines of this character it has been usual to clutch and unclutch the clutch by means of a hand-wheel, usually of star form, and serving as a nut or bolt to draw the clutch elements together or to separate the same. It has been found in practice that sufficient clamping force cannot be exerted conveniently by mechanism of this character, especially when the feeding movement of the tool is resisted by great forces required in modern machine tool practice for taking heavy cuts, and under the modern practice of high cutting speeds, and it has also been found that release of the clutches by such means has also been difficult and inaccurate for definite limits of cutting movements, due, in part, to the fact that such hand-wheels turn during the feeding movements of the tool, making it difficult to properly grasp and to turn the same in clamping and in unclamping directions. It is the object of the present invention to provide simple means capable of exerting great power for operating a clutch, further, to provide such means with a control part which is relatively stationarily positioned, further, to provide improved clutching means wherein the clutch is normally in clutching relation, and a hand-lever normally stationary on its support and pivoted in such manner that the operator may conveniently exert great power for changing the clutch relations, and, further, to provide novel means whereby a cam-operating lever may be independently mounted in coactive relation with the clutch actuating part. |

A clamping device is provided for fixing the arm in a selected position so that the spindle is in registry with the hole to be drilled, whereby the arm cannot swing during the drilling operation. Where smaller holes are to be drilled and the drilling thrust is not great, it has been the practice to perform the drilling operations without clamping the arm, but this is not efficient, for dis-aligned or otherwise inaccurate drilling is apt to result. |

This invention relates to an improved mounting for lathe centers and the like. These lathe center mountings are incorporated in the conventional tailstock as currently employed in lathe construction. More specifically, the invention relates to a mounting which will permit the work centering element to move relative to the tailstock when undue axial pressure is put upon the center as occurs when the work expands in the course oi the cutting operation.
In the development of this art there have been a number of devices disclosed and claimed in patents which have had the purpose of permitting expansion of the work. One of the earlier examples of this type of device is found in the patent to Müller, No. 1,318,223, issued 07 October, 1919, wherein a spring was employed to permit yielding of the work center in accordance with the expansion of the work. However, as the art of turning has developed, that is, with the advent of high speed tools and the procedure of dry cutting, the amount of heat generated in the work has increased. It will be seen that the tailstock structure and the work center mounting must be of rugged construction to properly support the work under these conditions and yet at the same time, the device, permitting axial expansion of the work, must do so readily and in the proper amount. |

It is customary practice to provide a wide range of lathe spindle speeds in order to rotate the Work at a cutting speed recommended for the work diameter, material, type of cutting tool, and other determinant factors. To achieve maximum efficiency it is important that the head stock be capable of speedy and convenient spindle speed selection in setting up the lathe for the various jobs. For this purpose the head stock transmission is provided with shiftable range selection gears in combination with speed selection gears to provide several ranges and individual speeds within the ranges. An example of this arrangement is disclosed in the patent to William G. Hoelscher, No. 2,332,381, issued 19 October, 1943. This transmission may be assembled to provide either twenty-seven, eighteen or nine speeds by making a relatively simple change in the gear train. The manufacturer thus is able to standardize the head stock and may alter it to provide the required number of speeds to suit customer requirements. The present structure follows generally the principles disclosed in this prior patent and is designed to provide speedier and more convenient selectivity and improved performance. |

In setting up a lathe for operation, it is necessary to adjust the tailstock center longitudinally so that the work may be engaged between the head and tailstock centers. Where the variation in work length is slight; the tailstock center may be adjusted longitudinally relative to the tail stock to engage the work. When the variation is greater than the adjustment range of the center however, it is necessary to shift the tail stock bodily to a position approximating the end of the work and the center then is adjusted to establish the bearing engagement. To permit tailstock adjustment, the tailstock is mounted slidably upon the bed and clamping means are provided to clamp it in selected position. In conjunction with these clamping devices, it is customary to provide a series of ratchet teeth in the bed and to equip the tailstock with, a pawl or similar latching device. to establish a positive lock between the tailstock and bed. This arrangement resists positively the thrust of the work against the tailstock center to, prevent the tailstock from shifting under vibration and impacts. |

The feed rail structure forms part of an electrical distribution system mounted upon the lathe bed and in electrical connection with lever operated switches mounted on the carriage; these switches, in turn, are an electrical connection with the headstock motor and with a rapid traverse motor, thus providing a centralized station at the carriage for control of both motors.

Claim:
In the form of machine disclosed in the copending application, the plastic sheet is fed from a continuous roll and blanks are severed from the roll. These blanks are fed progressively through the machine for a series of operations thereon, the ultimate product being a four-sided box, the sides of which are firmly united together. In passing through the machine of this invention, the blank is subjected to a trimming operation and successive wall forming operations at which the material is crimped or formed under heat and pressure to define a bottom and four sides. The sides are bent into substantially perpendicular positions with respect to the bottom, after which they are brought together and adhesively joined or merged at the corners. The present application relates to the mechanism for feeding the sheet material from the roll, severing it into measured lengths and advancing the severed sheets from the feeding mechanism into the box forming machine. |

At the present time,, large numbers of aluminum foil pans are used in bakeries and other food-processing plants,, and a foil pan manufacturer may produce as many as 200,000 pans in a day. It has been found desirable for the manufacturers of these pans to supply them to bakeries in a greased condition ready for use. This invention relates to machines for manufacturing containers and is particularly directed to a machine for manufacturing folded rectangular shaped containers including a bottom and upstanding side and end walls. One typical article adapted to be produced by the present machine is an aluminum foil baking pan. These pans are made from a light-weight aluminum foil and in recent years have been used extensively for packaging baked goods and other food products. When foil pans of this type are employed in a bakery, the unbaked raw dough is placed in the pan, and processed in the usual manner. |
