A New One.
Herewith we show a front quarter view of a late and attractive design in under mounted traction engines; the new Avery double cylinder locomotive. The handsome design speaks for itself, and it has made an enviable record for power. The Avery Company has used one all this season in their factory yards, and have given it a good trying out there. Those of our readers who have visited the Avery factory know of the heavy grade up from the railway tracks, and this engine had no trouble in drawing up two dead 20-horse engines up that grade. Another instance as where, in exhibiting the engine to a prospective buyer, it was hitched to eleven cars standing on the siding, four loaded, the brakes were set on these and the engine pulled them right along. It has proven equally efficient in the belt and on the road, and is a very handsome and powerful machine. The engines are mounted on the "I" frame shown under the boiler, not being attached to the boiler at any point. They are very accessible for all purposes, and experience has shown that, while the low flywheel is much easier to belt it has no objections whatever in actual use.
It has attracted much favorable comment at the World’s Fair, at the factory, and wherever shown, and will doubtless be very much in evidence another year with the lovers of double cylinder engines. |
