Messrs. J. Archdale & Co., of Birmingham, make a series of neat capstan lathes, one of which, of 7-in. centres, is illustrated in Fig. 234. This will admit a 2-in. bar through the spindle, and turn a length of 9 in. The turret-slide is self-acting, and the turret can be revolved automatically, or by hand, as desired. The cut-off slide is traversed by the hand-wheel, and has back and front tool-holders. There is a chasing apparatus, an oil tray and tap beneath the bed, and reversing countershaft. Some other 7-in. lathes by the same firm are fitted with wire-feed to operate on bars as large as 1 in. diameter, while without the wire-feed 1½-in. bars can be taken through the spindle. The smallest capstan lathe of this firm is of 3½-in. centre, with wire-feed for ½-in. rods. In this the turret is either automatic or otherwise, the change being effected by the movement of a lever. The cut-off rest has two tool-holders; the headstock is cast solid with the bed. |
