Image Description:
The engraving above shows what is, so far as we know, the largest gas engine made up to this time. It is now one of the regular sizes at the works, in Philadelphia, where Messrs. Schleicher, Schumm & Co., founded an extensive manufacture of these engines fourteen years ago.

During all this time an increase in the capacity has been going on, culminating, as we suppose, in the design above. There are two cylinders connected to one crank, or in other words, it is a twin engine with its cylinders superimposed, so the lateral width occupied is no more than for a single engine of 60 horse power. The space occupied on the foundation is 16 X 6.75 feet, and the weight of the engine 12.25 tons. The regulation is performed by the charge of gas; the consumption being as the load and varying in quantity, as from one to eight.
