Image Description:
THE HUBER MANUFACTURING CO. — The new Huber traction engine is fitted with a return flue boiler. The makers claim for this boiler superior steaming qualities, and an advantage in the cylindrical shape, which means an equal distribution of the weight of the boiler on the front and hind axles. The boiler is raised further from the ground, so that the engine can pass through streams without putting the fire out, and when travelling over mud and soft land the fire-box cannot rest on the ground and allow the wheels to spin round for lack of solid ground to rest upon. A large tank is hung on the smoke-box door; and when it is necessary to sweep the tubes the tank has to be swung around, being hung on the door. The Huber cushion-gear driving-wheel is shown by Fig. 235; the wheel does not revolve on the axle, neither does the axle turn; but the wheel revolves around the trunnion, which extends up and down from the centre of the hub, forming a five-inch bearing for the bracket, which is fastened to the axle, holding the wheel at right angles with the axle, but free to slide up and down in the slotted trunnions. Fig. 236 shows the superheater. The steam passes from the boiler into a small pipe, down through the boiler to the bottom of the fire-flue. The end of the pipe is open, and it is encased in a large pipe, so that the steam passes through the fire between the outer and inner pipes before being delivered to the engine. This double pipe is encased in a heavy cast-iron sleeve, which protects it from damage from the great heat, and dries the steam, causing some economy. Fig- 237 illustrates the gearing. The pinions on the countershaft are interchangeable, and are made of steel. Instead of using a key to fasten them, a clutch, as shown on the pinion on the crank-shaft, is used. The ratio of the gearing is given in the table of dimensions on the following page. (See part 2 for table.)
