The Acme engine is an upright, double-acting engine, with cranks 180° to each other. The fuel used is kerosene oil of 110° to 115° fire test, atomized by a steam jet. As it is not subjected to any heat or flame until it enters the fire tube, it is as safe as, or rather, much safer than, an oil lamp.
The main bearings are bushed with bronze, and made on the interchangeable system, and can be renewed when worn at small cost. The cylinders are directly over the centre of shaft, so that the engine may be run either way. The valve is of the balanced rocking type, of extra long and large wearing surfaces.
Lubrication is accomplished by carrying in the crank case a mixture of oil and water, into which the cranks dip at every revolution, and are not only flooded themselves, but throw the oil to every part inside the case; the wrist pins in the hollow pistons getting a good supply at each stroke, also the lower part of the cylinders, whence it is wiped by the pistons. As this oil cannot escape, it is used over and over.
The eccentric-rod strap and bearing, and the outer bearing of the valve stem, are the only bearings not constantly flooded while the engine is running. (Manufactured by the Rochester Machine Tool Works, Rochester, N. Y.) |
