The engraving on the opposite page represents a Porter Heavy Duty Engine. The manufacturers say they have taken it for granted that the three desirable points in an engine are economy, durability, and a low price.
Economy does not mean always the least number of pounds of coal per horse-power developed by a new engine, but it does mean the coal bills, the engineer's bills, the repair bills, the value of the time lost in break-downs or stoppages, for a year or a series of years, all added together and divided by the horse-power furnished during that period; when this comparison is made, they are confident their claim for economy is well founded. As to durability, an examination of the engravings will be most convincing. The massive frame speaks for itself. The bearings having a length equal to the diameter of the cylinders; a hammered steel shaft having the diameter of half the bore of the cylinder or more; the solid pillow-block; cross-heads with bearing surface enough to preclude the necessity of frequent adjustment; generous diameter of wrist-pins; the perfectly balanced valve, not subject to wear; the total great weight of the engine—all combine to render its durability unquestioned. Among the excellent features of this engine is the oiling of the crank-pin, a device patented by the Porter Company, whereby the oil drops from a Sight-Feed-Cup, into an annular ring cast slightly eccentric in the back of the crank-plate, from the deepest part of which a straight hole is drilled to the centre of the crank-pin surface; centrifugal force thus distributing to the wrist whatever amount of oil may be delivered from the cup as it drops.
The automatic governor is of the latest and approved design, especially adapted for this engine. A throttling governor can be used in place of the automatic, if preferred.
