The Nathan Type D. V. Valve-less Mechanical Lubricator is equally suitable for lubrication of valves and cylinders and other steam actuating or actuated parts, as for lubrication of the many moving parts on the locomotive chassis. It is furnished in capacities from eight pints to thirty-six pints, and its construction permits the arrangement of feeds to meet any desired combination for engine and chassis lubrication.
Inside the oil reservoir there is a separate valve-less pump for each outlet and each of these pumps contains a piston, P, which in its highest and lowest position automatically opens and closes the oil inlet and oil outlet openings by means of a partial turning movement of the piston. The slot, S, connects the space underneath the piston with the oil admission, O, when the piston rises, and with the pressure chamber, K, when the piston is lowered. The stroke of the piston is adjusted by means of the regulating screw, R. The pistons obtain the turning and simultaneous up and down movement from the shaft, 37, which on its part is actuated by the ratchet shaft, 158. The ratchet drive is a self-contained oil-lubricated unit provided with 3 driving pawls and 3 counter pawls. In addition to the main strainer below the cover, a fine strainer, F, is also provided near the oil inlet openings to the piston chambers. The lower part of the reservoir is supplied with a heating pipe, U. A new type of indicator control valve provides simple heat regulation for seasonal changes.
The action of the plunger can be visually inspected, as the extension rod is raised and lowered, through the open chamber beneath the adjusting screw, by lifting the cover at the top of the reservoir.
The two larger sizes of lubricators known as Types D. V.-6 and D. V.-7 may be provided with either single or double pumping units. The double pumping units which are interchangeable with the single units operate on the same principle as the well known Nathan single pumping unit. The double unit has two outlets, each discharging a fixed amount of oil which can be adjusted by means of a single regulating screw. The double units may be used for feeds for guides, hubs, shoes and wedges, etc. |
