Climer and Riley's vision was of a universal woodworking machineâ€”jointer, planer, molder, rabbetter, etc. They sold their rights to McBeth, Bentel, Margedant & Co., who were very successful with the Universal Wood Worker and could rightly claim to be the maker of the first jointer. Once these patents expired, others simplified the machine down to the single-function jointer.

The idea is to reduce the tendency of the idler wheel to act like a flywheel and cause the blade to buckle, as may happen when starting, or when the blade hits a knot. It is also supposed to help prevent tearing or wearing of the leather or rubber tire.
