Gage for cutter-knives
|
Samuel J. Shimer |
Milton, PA |
"My invention relates to gages for the knives or cutters of the rotary cutter-heads of woodworking machines and may be employed in connection with square, trapezoidal or other shaped cutter-heads having seats or faces to receive the knives or cutters, with chip-breaks at the front ends and parallel longitudinal shoulders near the rear or inner ends." These gages were a significant improvement over trial-and-error setting of moulder knives. Unfortunately, the gages are often lost when cutterheads change hands. |

Samuel J. Shimer |
Milton, PA |
"My invention relates to trapezoidal cutterheads for woodworking-machines such as shown in the reissued Letters Patent granted to me the 29th day of June, 1897, 11,616 and 11,617, in which the sides are alternately arranged and alternately inclined inwardly and outwardly with respect to the axial line of the head. such heads are formed with outwardly-projecting ship-breaks at the front ends of the knife-seats, which are also alternately arranged and alternately inclined with respect to the axial line of the head. In practice such chip-breaks wear away in the course of time and the knives require to be frequently sharpened, so that it is extremely difficult to adjust the knives or cutters so that the cutting edges will be in proper position with respect to the head. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction of such cutter-heads whereby a gage may be applied thereto to adjust the cutting edges of the knives." |

This planer cutterhead design preceded the much more famous patent 877,407 of 1908, which is nowadays remembered as the first successful round cutterhead for planers and jointers. This 1899 patent was apparently acquired by Samuel J. Shimer & Sons, as evidenced by the patent date appearing on Shimer cutter-heads. The cutter-heads themselves do not seem to use this patent's wedge design. Rather, they use the design in the 1907 patent 874,871. Despite the fact that the Carsten patent was issued a few months later, the Carsten patent had priority over the 1907 Shimer patent because Carstens had first received a German patent. |
