328,377 Oct. 13, 1885 Scroll-sawing machine William F. Barnes Rockford, IL This patent date has been seen on a Barnes No. 7 scrollsaw. Improvements in the treadle saw claimed in this patent include the adjustable spring supporting shaft and tension arm and the use of a belt attached to the treadle at one end and to the saw frame at the other end.
354,849 Dec. 21, 1886 Belt gearing Benjamin F. Barnes Rockford, IL The invention is for situations where a belt is to link a large pulley with a nearby small pulley. The large pulley is a standard, smooth, flat-belt pulley, but the small pulley has sprocket teeth, and the belt has suitably spaced holes to accept the sprocket teeth. The mechanism allows a much lower belt tension than would otherwise be required, with the attendant bearing wear. This invention has been seen on a W. F. & John Barnes Co. No. 4 tablesaw.
357,567 Feb. 15, 1887 Metal-turning lathe William F. Barnes Rockford, IL This patent covers the use of two feed-screws, one rotating forward and the other rotating backward. A "semi screw-nut" engages one or the other feed-screws to control the direction of carriage movement. It was used on Barnes metal lathes such as the No. 4½.
