Sacrey Syracuse, NY "This invention relates to coupling structure, and more particularly to a coupling structure for joining two machine elements which rotate at high speed and which have to run true with great accuracy. An example of such an arrangement is the coupling of material cutting bits to the power shaft of routers of the type disclosed in patent 2,613,704..." The proposed "coupling structure", i.e., collet, replaces the usual screw threads with "male and female members having complemental cam surfaces which are particularly economical to machine or form, and which function, when the members are joined, to provide a coupling of great precision, whereby the parts joined by the coupling structure"—the router shaft and the cutting bit—"run true with great accuracy."

Emmons Nedrow, NY "It is advantageous to form the cutter arbor shafts in these portable power saws with a short or stub projection for supporting saw blades of normal thickness. However, upon occasion it is desirable to use cutters on these machines of substantial width—for example, dado cutters use for grooving.
"This invention has an object a cutter arbor shaft structure embodying an arrangement by which the shaft proper is adapted to support saw blades of normal thickness, and which may be extended to support cutters of different and substantial thickness."

2,842,170 Jul. 08, 1958 Saber saw structure Frank W. Mittins Memphis, NY
According to a history in Porter-Cable Mach. Co. v. Black & Decker Mfg. Co., 274 F. Supp. 905 (1967), Porter-Cable decide to design a saber saw that would be competitive with the dominant product at the time, the Swiss-made Scintilla. They ended up with two different designs: one was from a team led by Walter Papworth, as seen in this patent. The other design, due to John P. Bruck and Frank W. Mittins, used an orbital action. That orbital action led to excess chipping of the upper surface of the cut material, and was rejected by Porter-Cable's sales department.
