Used in the "Yankee" series of eggbeater hand drills. The jaws are kept spread apart by springs which are hidden from interference by bits or other objects pushed blindly into the chuck. The chuck is tightened by rotating the shell so that the threaded spindle proceeds inward along the chuck centerline. The attorneys were Howson & Howson, which firm exists to the present day. |

Spiral tool-driver
|
Thomas J. Fegley |
Philadelphia, PA |
The patent drawing shows the #75 Yankee "push brace". Fegley and Leopold's goal was to make a drill to be "....used in places difficult in access but which can be reached by a comparatively long tool, such as in car work, cabinet work, etc....." They also positioned the ratchet selector at the top where the operators hands were. And they installed a heavier, three jaw chuck. In the 1912 catalog they explained why they called this tool a brace. "It excels a bit brace in its greater rapidity and convenience in the lighter work ordinarily done by brace." See Patent#1022311 for improvements |

Utility drills like this one benefit greatly from means to store and protect the bits used to bore holes. A further benefit is the ability of the manufacturer to ship the drill in a smaller, less expensive box made possible by the break-down feature of this handle. The patent attorneys were Howson & Howson, which firm exists to this day. |

Clutch mechanism
|
George O. Leopold |
Philadelphia, PA |
Rather delicate-looking shift mechanism for the North Bros. line of non-ratchet two-speed hand drills. This is _not_ the five-speed mechanism for the large breast drills, which added a ratchet to their speed selectors. Instead, it is an alternative mechanism used with the 1445 drills. US Patent No. 1,015,235 was the second alternative, the one actually applied to the two speed, non-ratchet 1445 drills. |
