They also positioned the ratchet selector at the top where the operators hands were. And they installed a heavier, three jaw chuck. In the 1912 catalog they explained why they called this tool a brace. "It excels a bit brace in its greater rapidity and convenience in the lighter work ordinarily done by brace."
